Blood orange fruit has been cultivated in the southern Mediterranean since the 18th century. Harvested from blood orange trees, farmers in Italy began to grow the citrus fruit. Historians believe that the fruit would have been discovered at about that time, marking the emergence of this distinctive fruit with its red flesh in historical records.
