The Morello Cherry, also referred to as the sour cherry, is another variation of the universally beloved fruit which, as the second name might suggest, commands a much more sour, acidic flavour than other forms of cherry. Popular in modern day Iran, this fruit has been cultivated in parts of Eastern Europe and the Middle East since the time of the Ancient Greeks, over 2000 years ago. The Morello Cherry was introduced to Great Britain by the Roman Empire in the 1st Century AD, and its popularity took off around the time of King Henry VIII.

Morello Cherries are often used in the product of liqueurs, cocktails and other adult drinks. In Iran, Turkey, Greece and Cyprus, they are slowly boiled with sugar to produce a delicacy known as spoon sweets.
